Games We Play
"1-2-3" Waltz Best Ball
On the first hole, the lowest score among the four players counts as the team score. On the second hole, the two lowests scores become the team score. On the third hole, the three lowest become the team score. On the fourth hole, it's back to the one lowest score, and so on throughout the round.
High Low
The team's score (4 man team) on each hole is the combined score of the high gross and the low net.
Aggregate
Aggregate...all net scores (gross too on this) used for team score.
Stableford
A Stableford competition is a golf tournament in which the object is to get the highest score. That's because in Stableford, golfers are awarded points based on their scores in relation to par on each hole; e.g., one point for par, three points for birdie, minus one for bogey, minus two for double bogey, etc. The specific scores to be awarded are determined by the tournament director.
1...3..and 2...4 Best Ball
On the front nine, the best ball of the one and three players is added to the best ball of the two and four players for the team score. On the back nine, the best ball of the one and two players is added to the best ball of the three and four players. The players are numbered in accordance with their position on the scorecard.
In the Square
It's a two best ball game with one score coming from the player "in the square" and the other score coming from the best of the three remaining players. Each player takes his turn as the player in the square..two times on the first eight holes and two times on holes ten through seventeen. (holes nine and eighteen are played as regular two best ball holes).
Odd Even
One best ball on odd holes and two best balls on even holes.
Shamble
Like in a scramble, all members of a team (usually four) tee off and the best ball of the four tee shots is selected. All players move their balls to the spot of the best ball. From this point, the hole is played out at stroke play, with all members of the team playing their own ball into the hole.
Pinehurst (or alternate shot)
In the Pinehurst system, both players tee off, then they switch balls. Player A plays Player B's drive, and vice-versa. Each player hits the second shot. Then they select the best of the second shots, and from that point until the ball is holed they play only one ball in an alternate shot format. This pattern is repeated on all subsequent holes.
6.....6.....6
The first six holes the two best ball scores come from the one and three players, and the two and four players (using scorecard order). On holes seven through twelve, the two best balls come from the one and two players, and the three and four players. On holes thirteen through eighteen, the two best balls come from the one and four players, and the two and three players.
Scotch (aka Foursomes and Alternate Shot)
This is a competition in which two-person teams alternate hitting the same ball. The first player tees off, the second player hits the second shot, the first player hits the third shot, and so on until the ball is holed. Tee balls are alternated on each hole so that each player hits the same number of tee shots.
